Fall Winter 08/09 Fabric Trends You Need To Know.

Plaids

Whip out your plaid shirts from your Nirvana-loving days because tis’ the season of grunge. Plaid ( or tartan, whichever side of the Channel you’re from) have been rocked on the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, paired with jeans and a David Bowie tee, and on big shirt-dresses in Preen.

But of course plaid doesn’t just belong to a genre of music, in fact there are over 300 different kinds of plaids in the world; there’s the Scottish one as seen on House of Holland and the Punk one that is so fierce on Balmain.

As a fan of grunge, this trend is oh-so-suitable for me and yes, I have a drawer of plaid shirts so I’ll definitely be donning some form of plaid everyday.

Lace

The material that is considered ‘the old ladies’ favourite’ or ‘a racy lingerie type’, lace is is gaining a prominent presence on the runway. Given a slight modern revamp by Proenza Schouler and Prada, and a super sexy look at Givenchy and Dsquared, lace fits the bill of the transparency trend.

Though lace is a far too ‘mature’ material for most, I have to say the more I look at Prada’s interpretation of lace, the more I like how it is paired with the fake collars, fitted shirts and cute bibs; but I still won’t want to wear it. However Givenchy’s gothic lace has this special allure that sucks you in like a vampire’s charm, which is just so romantic.

Alexander Makes Me Cry.

Inspired by a dream about a princess living in a 600 year old elm tree then creating a story about her meeting her love and becoming a queen? Fashion doesn’t get any more fantastical than this.

This collection was a complete tear away from the Spring Summer 08 collection which was inspired by the late Isabella Blow and it just shows how diverse and unpredictable McQueen can be. He is a man after my own heart and it looks like he’s not going to stop anytime soon.

What Alexander McQueen sent down his Parisian runway ( or should I say a stroll around an elm tree that was a replica of his in his backyard) for Fall Winter 08/09 was beautiful clothes fit for a queen.

The models walked out with such an air of royalty and haughtiness that you’re expecting a command from them to go scrub the kitchen floor or something. The clothes are done in true McQueen fashion; sharp tailoring and intricate details with an abundance of luxurious fabrics and completed with exquisite jewels for crowns. All that exuberant luxury makes you stop and wonder if this is pret-a-porter or haute couture.

By the time the final dress came out in all its blood red silk glory, I had tears in my eyes, as cliched as it may sound it is the only way to describe how I feel ( well, it’s either this or ‘THIS IS SO ORGASMIC! AAHH!’).

When we get annoyed and lost in the mad flurry that is Fashion Week, sometimes all it takes is a beautiful collection to remind us of the reasons why we go through all this. And Alexander McQueen gave us just that.

Here’s the beauty in all its moving glory. An orchestra version of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit? Alexander can do no wrong in my book.
