Thank God for NewGen because it introduces to the world new designers and that means more clothes for all of us. Already into its fourteenth season, the NewGen scheme is sponsored by Topshop and let’s just say NewGen is to London like CFDA is to New York.
Here’s what NewGen does exactly: NewGen sponsors 20 winners for up to three years to show on the catwalk or in an exhibition. They also get financial support to develop their businesses into well-known brands. This is definitely going to give the young designers international recognition.
From Alexander McQueen to Matthew Williamson to Giles to Jonathan Saunders, these now famous designers had been beneficiaries of NewGen, hence I’m sure any young designer that emerges from their list would definitely rock the fashion world.
Here are my picks of the recent NewGen winners whom I think will rock everybody’s world and you should look out for in the upcoming season.
Henry Holland (House of Holland)
A London College of Printing graduate, Henry Holland, along with best friend and model Agyness Deyn, kept everyone including me, musing about their witty and cheeky slogan tees for months on end. Both him and his tees are fixatives in the London party scene, and I think they’re just perfect for a night out of partying.
However do not expect these slogan tees to be around forever. A designer needs to always reinvent himself and believe me when I say Henry Holland can reinvent your pants off. Every season matures as more fabrics are being used and you finally see his aesthetics in printing.
Handpicked by Phoebe Philo for Chloe’s Best Designer award and also the winner of Lancome’s Modern Femininity award; you know this Central Saint Martins graduate is full of potential and is bound to take the fashion world by storm.
Her clothes are statement making pieces inspired by the power woman confident of her sexuality. Filled with eye-catching prints with matching shoes and hosiery, I’m sure the Scutt woman will stop time whenever she enters a room.
I can hardly wait to see what the new designers will churn out in the upcoming season after seeing such awesome and impressive works of art. Oh how I wish London Fashion Week would arrive sooner!
